Take a sneak preview:
Arkansas Razorbacks
A word of warning before you get started -- you may detect just
a little bit of bias as you read along during this next story. No
hard feelings. We all know it's true. Go ahead. Look it up:
"And on the eighth day, God created the Razorbacks."
Need I say more? Just take a drive up in the Ozarks
this fall on a crisp Saturday afternoon. Take in a game at Razorback
stadium and get a glimpse of what Heaven will be like as we all
gather to cheer on His team. Or if you'd rather, go catch a basketball
game and get a taste of what hell will be like -- 40 minutes of
it.
Michigan Wolverines
Without a doubt, one of the most popular teams in the entire country,
especially in regard to its athletic teams, is the University of
Michigan. Just go anywhere that a lot of our youngsters are gathered
and you'll see what I'm talking about. The number of youth sporting
Michigan caps, jackets, and shirts is amazing. Pages have already
been filled describing the numerous and memorable gridiron showdowns
against such teams as Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, and
Minnesota -- you name it. Every game's a rivalry. There's even been
a book written about the Fab Five, the most decorated and highly
rated freshmen class in college basketball history. Yes, much is
known about the history of Michigan and its famous athletic teams.
Surprisingly though, there is not much known about the history of
its famous nickname -- the Wolverines.
Miami Hurricanes
I believe that most athletic directors now would like to plead temporary
insanity for scheduling the Hurricane in the Orange Bowl. Most would
prefer their chances playing Russian Roulette with a single-shot.
For most teams visiting Miami's home field, the routine consists
of flying in, get humiliated, pick up check and go home. I can honestly
say the most enjoyable and entertaining games I have ever watched
on a Saturday afternoon have been the matchups between Miami and
Florida State playing for State bragging rights. You don't think
a lot of Florida recruits are tuned in to this one do you? One of
the most classic scenes in all of college sports has got to be when
the Miami mascot, Sebastian the Ibis, holds up the State Champs
sign to signal a 'Canes victory.
Florida Gators
Perhaps the most appropriate nickname in the land belongs to the
University of Florida, located in Gainesville. For when opposing
teams come calling to Florida's stadium, more popularly known as
the Swamp, they know they're in Gator territory. Very few have returned
from "the swamp" in one piece. When they do get home,
they don't want to go back. Just ask anyone in the SEC.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The most popular and most respected team, in terms of fans and notoriety,
is the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This is especially
true on the gridiron. It is widely known across the college football
arena that when you line up against Notre Dame and expect to win,
you better bring your lunch. It doesn't happen too often. The Irish
have a tremendous history of having all the horses up front, coupled
with All-Americans at the skilled positions, to go with a stubborn,
fighting defense. The combination of overall superior talent and
superb annual recruiting of the nation's blue chip players has made
Notre Dame a dynasty which will stand for years to come.
For a complete list of schools that are featured in the book, please see
the list of colleges in our College Links section. There is also a
complete reference section in the book that lists all Division I schools
and their nicknames - Thanks!
